Some experimental and clinical observations on the anticonvulsive action of paraldehyde.

چکیده
In the practice of neurosurgical operations the convulsions occasionally elicited during cortical manipulations or produced by electrical stimulations may sometimes be difficult to control, and may give rise in some cases to dangerous convulsive states that may even end fatally. Barbiturates and other common drugs may fail to stop such convulsions quickly, as we have observed in some of our cases. We have recently tried paraldehyde by intravenous injection in the treatment of such convulsive states, and the good results obtained have been the basis for an experimental and clinical study of ithis drug. In the literature we have found that Cervello (1884) was the first to use paraldehyde by mouth and -rectum for narcosis. Nitzescu and lacobovici (1934) recommended paraldehyde by intravenous injection (0-15 to 0-2 c.cm. per kg.) as a basal anaesthetic before the administration of ether. Wechsler (1940) has also successfully employed the slow intravenous injection of 1 c.cm. of paraldehyde for the treatment of status epilepticus.

Evaluation of Anticonvulsive ٍEffect of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles in Comparison with Conventional MgO in Diabetic and Non-diabetic Male Mice
Introduction: Some studies show magnesium has anticonvulsive effect in some animal models. Despite of the availability of well-studied anticonvulsant drugs, this evaluation was not carried on new kind of magnesium supplement, magnesium oxide nanoparticles (nMgO). According to the interaction between magnesium and convulsion, this study was designed to evaluate the effect of nMgO on strychnine-i...
متن کاملPotentiation of Paraldehyde Hypnosis by Tolbutamide.
Beaser (1958) has recorded that prior administration of tolbutamide produces an intolerance to alcohol in the form of hot flushes. Disulfiram produces such an intolerance in a more marked· way. Keplinger and· Wells (1957) have reported that disulfiram prolongs the hypnotic effect of paraldehyde in mice. Hence it is possible that tolbutamide may have some action on paraldehyde anaesthesia analog...

Hypothyroidism is one of the problems that can cause severe growth and developmental defects in children and infants. By using anticonvulsive drugs (Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine, Navalproate , and Phenytoin), liver microsomal enzymes will be increased and will lead to hypothyroidism in infants because of increasing metabolism of T3, and T4 by liver. The purpose of this study was to evaluate th...
متن کاملAnticonvulsive and antioxidant effects of pioglitazone on pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures in mice
Introduction: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder caused by uncontrollable discharge of neurons in the brain. After a seizure oxidative stress play an important role in the oxidative neuronal damage. In this study, we evaluated the anticonvulsant and antioxidant effects of pioglitazone, a PPAR-γ agonist that is used in type2 diabetes, on pentylenetetrazol-induced seizure in mice. Methods: In t...
متن کاملExperimental Studies on the Relation of the Pituitary Body to Renal Function
1. The inconstant results of past observations on the relation of pituitary extracts to renal activity have been due chiefly to unsuitable methods. 2. A standard curve of artificially induced polyuria may be plotted for rabbits, giving 200 cc. of water by mouth. 3. Extracts of the pars intermedia and posterior lobe of the hypophysis, given by mouth, subcutaneously, or intravenously, are able de...
